Tips on How lifeguards Can Stay Warm This Winter

For anyone who has been saying “Winter is coming,” well… it’s here. Depending on where you are, you may be piling on the winter coats or throwing on a light jacket before you head outdoors. Either way, it’s important that lifeguards — indoor or outdoor lifeguards alike — take necessary precautions to stay warm throughout the winter months.

Bundle Up

Invest in a warm winter wardrobe, especially if you’re lifeguarding outside. You can swap your lifeguard shorts for lifeguard sweatpants. For the top half of your body, you may want to buy a hoodie or two. If you’re in a super cold climate, it’s smart to buy thermal undershirts that hug your body tight to maximize warmth.

Buy a Blanket

When you’re sitting in your lifeguard chair, it’s a good idea to have a blanket handy. You’ll need to ditch the blanket if you’re making a rescue, but otherwise, you can wrap it around your body to keep warm.

Switch to Indoors (with heat)

If you’re an outdoor lifeguard and it’s getting too cold for you, consider switching over to lifeguarding at an indoor pool… as long as it’s a building with heat. Make sure to tour your future facility to check the temperature inside for comfort.

Just because it’s getting cold doesn’t mean lifeguards need to suffer. There are plenty of ways to stay warm in the colder months. Before you know it, we’ll be back in balmy summer weather —hang in there!
