Beat the Heat this Summer as a Lifeguard

The first day of summer was June 20th, so it’s safe to say we’re in the full swing of balmy summer weather. We can’t control the temperature, but we can certainly find ways to make it a little more tolerable. Looking to beat the heat this summer? Read on for some tips!

1. Use an umbrella

You’ll often see lifeguards sitting directly under an umbrella, and there’s a reason for it. Using an umbrella gives you shade to keep cool when the sun is causing so much heat. Plus, it’s a nice way to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays.

2. Change your wardrobe

There are plenty of options for lifeguard clothing, from shorts to two-piece bathing suits. Check with your facility to see what’s acceptable and start shopping for something a little more breathable.

3. Hydrate

We’re always telling lifeguards how important it is to stay hydrated throughout the day, for obvious health reasons. Another reason is that it helps you stay cool. There’s no doubt your body will be producing more sweat, so hydration is key.

4. Jump in

This one may sound a little silly, but one of the best ways to cool off quickly is by jumping in the water. If you have a chance to jump in the ocean or pool during one of your breaks, give it a try.

5. Try a fan

If you’re allowed, you may consider bringing a portable fan with you on the job. Think: Disneyworld in the summertime. All the tourists with mini fans are onto something!
