Everything About Saltwater Pools You Need to Know

Saltwater isn’t just for the ocean — lots of facilities and recreation centers are starting to move over to saltwater pools. If you’re wondering what that means, you’re not alone. There are a lot of questions surrounding the saltwater pool talk, so let’s explore them and learn a bit more about this new wave of pools.

Is there really salt in the pool?

Absolutely! A saltwater pool really does contain salt — just maybe not as much as you may think. The average is about 3,000 parts of salt per meter, or 3,000 ppm.

Will I taste salt?

Although 3,000 ppm sounds like a lot, it’s not enough to put a salty taste in your mouth. To put it into perspective, the Pacific Ocean has about 35,000 ppm. The short answer? Nope, you won’t taste salt from a saltwater pool!

Does the salt damage the pool?

Some people are worried about corrosion in saltwater pools, but there’s nothing to worry about here. The main reason why corrosion might occur in a pool is because of a pH imbalance.

Is saltwater better than chlorine?

It’s hard to say. They’re both completely sanitary, so the biggest difference is that chlorine can be harsh on the skin. If you’re someone who experiences reactions or allergies to chlorine, saltwater may help clear things up for you.
