Health Tips for Lifeguards on the Coronavirus

With new cases of the Coronavirus every day, it’s important that lifeguards are fully equipped to deal with anything and everything that could mean for our beaches. As of now, many public beaches are remaining open, which means lifeguards are still needed. Here are some tips to stay healthy and safe in the wake of the pandemic:

1. Stay in the loop.

We consider this one of the most important things you can do because the news is changing on a daily — even hourly — basis. Be aware of everything happening in our world and your community, especially when you’re heading to the beach or the pool for your shift.

2. Keep your hands to yourself unless you’re performing a rescue.

Most people are following the general rule of practicing safe distance from others, but it’s a little different for lifeguards. You may need to get close to people if you’re performing a rescue. In all other cases, though, keep a safe distance.

3. Use a bag valve mask when performing CPR.

Rather than relying on your own mouth to provide air to someone who is struggling to breathe on their own, use a bag valve mask. This keeps both you and the victim safe from potentially spreading germs or bacteria to one another.

4. Use hand sanitizer throughout your shift.

Everyone is flocking the stores for germ-x, tissues and antibacterial soap — so don’t feel bad about keeping a bottle of hand sanitizer by your side when you’re on duty! Be sure to use it often, especially after coming into contact with something that could potentially transmit germs.

5. Keep up your immune system.

Vitamins, extra sleep and lots of water are all ways to combat potential viruses. There’s no guarantee these things will keep you from contracting something, but it’s important in times like this that your immune system is at an all-time high.

From our eLifeguard family to you and yours, we hope you stay safe and healthy throughout this time.
